Reflective Practice for Diverse Career Development: Highlights from APCDA Hybrid Conference 2026

APRIL 28 2026

HIGHLIGHTS FROM APCDA CONFERENCE 2026
The 2026 APCDA Hybrid Conference kicked off with its Professional Development Institute on 27 Apr 2026. Roberta Borgen and Bill Borgen delivered an inspiring session titled "A Reflective Approach for Career Development for Diverse Clients." Their workshop emphasised the importance of empathy, active listening, and building trust with clients before moving to action planning. Drawing from research and practical models—including the Hope-Action Theory and the Career Engagement Model, they encouraged practitioners to reflect, connect, contextualise, customise, and collaborate in their approach. Key takeaways included:
  • Recognising and addressing biases in career counselling
  • Understanding clients’ unique contexts, including family, culture, and external influences
  • Advocating for systemic change and viewing policymakers as allies
  • Embracing diversity and inclusivity, tailoring strategies to individual needs

Participants engaged in case study analyses, interactive discussions, and were challenged to reflect on their own professional networks and consider how to drive positive change in their communities.
This session reinforced that career development is an ongoing journey—one that requires flexibility, reflection, and a commitment to inclusivity.
